siglas en inglés de health maintenance organization

(español: organización para la mantención de la salud).

Organización pública o privada que presta atención médica integral a sus afiliados, sobre la base de un contrato de prepago. Las HMO otorgan una amplia gama de servicios de salud por un monto fijo. En el modelo de prepago por agrupación médica, los médicos se organizan como agrupación con una agencia aseguradora. Una fundación de atención médica o una asociación de prácticas individuales habitualmente involucra a múltiples compañías aseguradoras, que reembolsan a los miembros de una red dispersa de médicos particulares, los fondos que han prepagado los afiliados. Consideradas originalmente un medio para controlar los costos de la atención médica y satisfacer la demanda creciente de servicios de salud, las HMO se han tornado controversiales, porque algunas limitan la atención, rehusándose a pagar por ciertos exámenes y tratamientos, en contra de las indicaciones de sus propios médicos.
